Traces of flight on the fog

On the afternoon of November 15, 1818, a jet holdings flies over southern Germany. Between Ulm and Memmingen the plane leaves its contrails at high altitude. They are cast as shadows in the high fog / fog of the Danube valley and the Alpine foothills.

The elongated ovals of the holding over southern Germany „wander“ formally over the land, because they are driven by the high wind strong to the southwest. This effect is very strong, because it counteracts the afternoon change in the position of the sun, which pushes the shadow to the east-northeast at this time of year. The contrails remain amazingly long visible in the satellite image and then dissolve slowly.

In the last pictures then more contrails appear as a striking shadow. But they reflect the normal flight operations and point to scheduled flights.
